Coyhaique, hub of Aysen

From the Aoniken, Koy-Aike, this young city from the twentieth century is surrounded by magnificent mountains, amazing rivers and turquoise lakes that inspire its visitors to explore and wonder at the unspoiled nature that this destination, at the very heart of the Patagonia, has to offer. This place with its rough, yet beautiful scenery will capture and ignite all your senses while you immerse in the perfection of the evergreen forest, hanging glaciers, lagoons and rapids.

Founded in October 12th of 1929, between Simpson and Coyhaique rivers, it’s the capital city of the Aysén Region and home of 63.567 inhabitants.


How to Get There

By plane: Take one of the three daily flights serviced by LATAM and Sky Airlines from Santiago International Airport (SCL) to Balmaceda airport (BBA), the closest to the city of Coyhaique. Transportation services are well identified as transfer services outside the baggage claim area. You can take a US$10 (*) shuttle that will take you to your hotel door or a ~US$5 (*) bus that will drop you off at Coyhaique’s main square.

By car: for the most adventurous, you can also rent a car in Puerto Montt and drive yourself through one of the most scenic roads in all Patagonia. Please account for extra travel days (and weather conditions).

 


Main Attractions

Simpson River National Reserve:

More than 40.000 acres adorned by peaks over 1.500 meters in height, green valleys and narrow canyons, natural shelters of waterfalls and rapids. This is the result of a rugged geography that rewards its visitors with the perfect scenery to walk around and discover different activities as trekking, fly-fishing and camp under clear skies.

Coyhaique National Reserve:

An adventure that will take you to a natural sanctuary that protects the exotic flora and fauna of the region. As you immerse in this beautiful landscape you will travel through snowed trails for the opportunity to see hanging glaciers and the famous mountain chain of Cerro Castillo.  Don’t forget to visit the archeological site Paredon de las Manos.

General Carrera Lake

Embark yourself and sail to discover the incredible Marble Chapel Sanctuary at the largest lake of Chile and explore through the many galleries that these caves hold; a variety of grays, blues and other colors will reflect from the walls and ceilings above turquoise waters. A natural wonder at the heart of Chilean Patagonia.
